A Christmas full of smiles!

The kids drew names this year, it was cute seeing the gifts they bought each other… Trevor gave Sage a soccer ball, and Nick got a watch for Sophie, thrilled! The girls gave Nick & Josh some skullcandy headphones.

Trevor scored! He got new snowboard boots from Josh, and a guitar! Just in time for his guitar class in school this semester. One happy boy.

My sweetie surprised me with a gel foam mattress topper, since our new bed is so hard. It is sooo comfy! He also spoiled me with a laser measurer for work (so nice), and a beautiful antique chevel mirror, I like it although it makes me look fat :). Thanks hon! Nick wasn’t feeling well and didn’t want many pictures, but he received a new guitar (his old one, which is still very nice, went to Trevor [above])

Sage didn’t think Santa got her what she really wanted. Then she saw the note in the tree…

After being so patient and reverent in church, the kids were excited to come home and open gifts. Sage told me “mom, no talking to anyone after church” ha, ha. When we got home, I hustled in the house and made a quick change, then told them that stockings were first. They ran to their stockings and found this…

Christmas Eve & Cookies for Santa

Santa’s cookies & milk and carrots for the reindeer were gobbled up Christmas morning with a thank you note from the big guy. Weird to think this may be our last year doing this, our girls still believe, but may not be much longer, they have many questions. Since Christmas was on a Sunday, we went to church first thing, then home for gifts. Love when Christmas falls on Sunday, only happens every 7 years.

Christmas Eve morning started with some special visitors, visiting from CA. So great seeing Danny & Lindsay!

I had to send Lindsay this pic of my clean kitchen shortly after they left, since they saw it so messy as they toured our new home. Still unpacking and things get cluttered fast with everyone home and a busy week. I told the family Santa can’t bring gifts in a messy home, everyone pitched in for a fast clean up.

I baked Lion House recipe banana bread w/ chocolate chips for neighbor gifts this year, delivered in a Christmas loaf dish (on the right). I figured I can handle it this year since we don’t have too many neighbors yet :).

We had a few other special visitors throughout the day, opened up new pj’s, and colored in new gigantic coloring books while sucking on candy canes (fun childhood traditions). Grandma & Uncle Mike dropped by with some filled stockings for the kids and $$ gift for the boys (just what a teenager wants). After dinner we read a few Christmas stories, and Luke II. So fun to celebrate His birth! Before going to bed, Sophie said “mom, today was a perfect day!” Made it all worth it.

Christmas wouldn’t be the same without coming here to see the lights

We enjoyed watching my sister-in-law and nieces sing in the Assembly Hall, so peaceful! Then my nephew introduced the girls to the Clydesdales. He drove these horse drawn carriages last winter.

Nick & Amber (my cute niece) catching up. Trevor recently came here with his Scout group and was excited to show us this short dramatization on families. He talked us into it, although we hadn’t seen the nativity yet, but what a neat film. Afterwards, the young sister missionaries gathered around us and we had such a nice chat. One from China, one from Finland, and the other from the states. I’m sure they’re missing their families this time of year, they seemed to enjoy ours, and we enjoyed their visits. The girl from China was thrilled to meet Sophie and Sage and they wanted to know about our experiences.

I left home quickly without my warm coat, so Paul insisted I wear his (we chuckled since it reminded us of our college days in cold Rexburg, I always wore his). Josh had to work, so we met him afterwards and grilled up a steak dinner with the whole family. Such blessings!

These next few posts have to be speed blogging, so I don’t skip posting about our Christmas. We’re enjoying our new home, all unpacked and settled in- ha, I wish! It’s pretty crazy moving a large family, but we had wonderful help with the move (blog about that soon), and we’re getting unpacked, settled, and really liking our new home & area. We didn’t move far so our kids are in the same schools, they’re very thankful!

We moved a few days before Thanksgiving, so I’ll share our Thanksgiving mishaps, I mean happenings soon, so thankful my mom cooked this year. We had fun decorating Gingerbread houses the other day…

Sweet Saturdays cheering on my kids and their teams. Watching Trevor play football and the girls play soccer, makes for a great week-end. Go Diggers & Sparta! Trevor and his team wore pink socks to honor breast cancer week.

Josh & Sage, the girls sure love their big brothers! and vice versa!

The only time you’ll see Josh wearing his old Jordan Jersey, since he goes to Alta. Way to cheer on your bro first, they were even playing Alta :) Josh has his snowboard waxed and ready to go, resorts open this week! He saved up for his season pass :)

wrote last month before life got crazy with our move…

after a rain, from our rose garden

When Paul & I were dating, he made sure I always had a fresh rose in my dorm, the sweetest! He would drive me to class on snowy mornings even though I lived across from campus, and he would eat any healthy thing I coaxed him to, even though he’s a picky eater. Now our lives are much busier, but our rose garden reminds me of our college days. Not long after we were married, he surprised me with a genuine gold dipped rose that will never die, so thoughtful.

We just celebrated our 22nd anniversary, wow- it’s flown by! It’s been fun reminiscing our last 22 years of marriage… the fun times we had dating in college, best friends, our exciting newlywed years, starting our family together, running a business together for awhile, traveling to China to adopt our girls, enjoying great blessings in our lives while working through our trials we face. Although our lives are much busier, we’re still having fun and love being together. He’s still my best friend.

I taught a lesson last month on marriage… eternal/forever marriages. What a good and sometimes sensitive topic. How important it is to nurture our relationships and continue to rekindle that love, to put our energies where it counts most. It’s so easy to let life get in the way- work, children, callings, sports, just keeping up with it all, but we need to make sure we’re not spreading ourselves out too thin.

Successful marriage tips we discussed-

Keep dating your spouse, keep the courtship alive! Just the two of you, it shows your children you treasure your relationship with your spouse. Schedule a date night each week or twice a month.
Learn their love language and show expressions of love in their language~ acts of service, words, quality time, gifts, or physical touch, how do they feel loved?
Don’t try to change who they are. Remember the saying- “Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, and half shut after marriage.” They are their own person, the one you chose, don’t think that you will change them after marriage.
Greet your spouse warmly when you see him, make him feel missed, loved, and appreciated- special.
Agree to disagree. It’s perfectly normal to have differences. Learn to say you’re sorry and put yourself in his shoes.
Laugh together often, a sense of humor is great medicine!

One of my favorite days of the year with these scary ghouls… such a nice, warm night. Weird to think this is our last year trick-or-treating here, I’ll miss it, such a fun night seeing everyone out. Bruno (our cheerleader) was so happy to join the kids! Felt very important.

The girls Halloween Party earlier today. They had a good time, but still weak in comparison to their last school’s parties. Oh well, they’re making the best of it. Cute that they sit next to each other in the classroom.

After making the rounds in our neighborhood, off to enjoy both Grandma’s. My mom makes some homemade chili or stew each year and the cousins catch up, and Grandma B. always has a special treat for the kids. We’re so lucky to have them close.

“I have candy and I’m not afraid to use it!” ha, ha. Sage, our expert organizer, lined up her goods at Grandma’s :).

Then the big candy swap with their friends the day after Halloween. Now, that brings back memories. There was some great bartering going on. Funny how they divided their piles with belts & bags, each having their own corner for their stash. I have to say, they were all pretty generous traders, and said they were rich in candy.

We almost went without pumpkin carving this year, the kids talked us into it, I’m glad they did!

Frightmares at Lagoon

I’m a little behind on posts good reason, I’ll give you a clue in the next post, so I’m catching up on Halloween posts before we’re on to Thanksgiving…

It’s tradition that we go to Frightmares during UEA week-end. A favorite time at Lagoon, with the extra spooky events along with the rides. Paul had to work this year, we missed him, but it was the only time we could go, and so glad he could join us for the other fun things we had planned...

Towards the end of the night we went through some haunted houses. The girls made me laugh as they went through each one determined not to get scared, I saw them jump a few times, but usually they led the way. They were bummed I wouldn’t let them go through the teenage scary ones with their brothers. They can’t be a teenager soon enough. Great Frightmares with my family this year!

Haunted Hallow- {Sunday Snapshot}

Fun celebration our city puts on each year that our kids look forward to. Such a nice community feel to our town with events like free concerts in the park and holiday celebrations like this. Just a warning- many pictures ahead, couldn’t choose a few.

Trevor declared this is his last year dressing up, so he’s having fun as Jack Sparrow. Funny how he moves around just like him, all uncoordinated. I tried to keep the theme having the girls be pirates, but they were set on- Sage being a Vampiress and Sophie a Skeleton, they were happy to be something scary and I was glad they still looked darling. The princess days are over way too fast. Glad Josh joined us, even though his friends wanted to hang out and he felt like the oldest kid there, way to support your family J without complaining, you know you had fun :)

Having a sister…

is like having a best friend around for your whole life.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching the girls and other children in the Primary Program today. They were looking forward to the program, they knew their parts well and enjoyed singing with their classes. What sweet spirits! We couldn’t help but silently chuckle at Sophie (she was in front center and wasn’t in a smiley mood like she is above), so whenever she looked at us she gave a quick smile or raised her expressive eyebrows to please us, then right back to her serious look, but at least she sang. And Sage was her happy self enjoying singing & performing (not like above, I was lucky to catch a glimpse of a smile from her then, they take turns smiling ;). It’s also nice seeing my boys bless & pass the sacrament each week, looking sharp, always willing to help where needed. Such blessings!

Sophie and Sage used to always dress like me. They would see what I was wearing in the morning and pick out matching colors and matching styles for themselves, lol. If I wanted them to wear more dresses, I had wear dresses. Then they went through a soccer phase and wanted to wear comfy soccer clothes and now they wear uniforms to school (love it), so it’s fun to see them dress up once in awhile. One thing’s for sure, they have their own style now and are very particular about their shoes! :)

Escape to Long Beach~ {Sunday Snapshot}

Once a year my work puts on a huge design convention- “Escape,” here was last years in Portland…

This year we met in Long Beach. The theme was “Empower the Designer”, last years- “We’re not participating in the Recession” :). It’s a fun business trip to take refresher classes, update technology, meet other designers, visit vendors, share ideas and participate in focus groups. Plus, feel a little pampered with banquets, prizes/awards, and a nice break from everyday work.

It was a delightful week!

Before returning, we stopped at a few design places we don’t have at home, of course we had to stop at Trader Joe’s. There’s a story behind this card I bought, I’ll have to share later so I don’t get sidetracked. I picked up some nice souvenirs to bring home to my family, wish they could’ve joined me. Although I really look forward to this yearly event, it’s never easy leaving my family.

Way to go Paul! for getting the girls ready for their fairy party, and doing their hair each morning, I know that may have been the biggest challenge while I was gone, you did great! I’m so thankful for Paul & Josh (17) for doing double duty and taking care of things while I was gone, I know it was a lot of work and running around, but everyone was in good hands and I appreciate your support and help, and hearing about the good times you had. And thanks Grandma for helping on Friday. It was so nice coming home to my happy family!

State Fair Time… {Sunday Snapshot}

Nothing like a good old fashioned Fair to enjoy with the family. Shortly after the girls were home, we took them to the Fair here. They had a few fears but had a great time. It’s about time we did it again, we visited the cows first…

Aaaw, this baby calf was born 5 hours ago. Didn’t even have it’s eyes open yet. The girls were thrilled to see it.

Animal Lovers

It was a delightful day with the kiddos, Josh had to work, missed him! The Midway rides, Pony ride, Funhouse, Gunnysack Slide were some of their favorites. They loved the Clydesdales in the horse pull. Not to mention the food~ BBQ’d corn on the cob, pretzel's & Cotton Candy- sounds like a balanced meal to me, for the Fair anyway. We ended up going to dinner after for a good meal, Josh met up with us :).

Strong dad! Thanks mom & dad for taking us to the Fair. We loved it!

5 years since we first laid eyes their such sweet but scared faces. my best b-day ever :)

How they’ve grown. Sage so kind, spunky, & talented, and a great friend to others.

Sophie so genuine, athletic, and compassionate, also a true friend. Looks so grown up in this picture, gives me a glimpse of how she’ll look as an adult.

Crepes and Cuties in Pink…

I made crepes one morning while my dad was here. Yummmmy, I could hardly make them fast enough. It’s become a new Sunday morning tradition. Here’s my favorite crepe recipe…

Crepes

4 Eggs, lightly beaten

1 1/3 C Milk

2 Tbsp butter, melted

1 cup flour

2 Tbsp white sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp cinnamon

In large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, flour, sugar, and salt until smooth. Heat in small skillet over medium heat. Grease pan with butter or Pam. Use small ladle, about 3 Tbsp. crepe batter in hot pan, tilting to spread evenly. Cook over medium heat 1-2 minutes per side (second side takes less time), or until golden brown.

Fill with favorite fillings:

bananas / Nutella

apple cinnamon (heat up apple pie filling, add cinnamon while heating)

raspberry jam

strawberries & cream

top with whipped topping or powdered sugar

full of excitement before school starts. Trevor returned from a week of scout camp in time to start football, the girls had their first soccer tournament in Park City, and Josh is starting his first job at the Pizza place and has been busy rehearsing for Broadway Kidz, opening night is next week-end, Woot! I thoroughly enjoy watching their sports and acting.

Way to go girls! Sophie and Sage are new to this team and were a little anxious at first playing at this level with all new girls & new coach, but it didn’t take long before they got right in and became a big part of the team. Sparta won 2 out of 3, they played their hearts out and had a lot of fun, good job Sparta! They also took Silver in the Sparta Cup.

A week-end with Grandpa

So sweet seeing the kids rekindle a relationship with their Grandpa that they don’t see often (lives out of state). Didn’t take long to catch up and get attached again. He swam with them, joined us for the big parade & lunch at the Lion House, even threw a football with the kids one night.

Cute seeing the kids talk with their grandpa about his farm, his hobbies, and what he liked as a kid. Grandpa reading them a story each night and Sage making sure he got a spoon quickly in the fast card game of Spoons :).

We’ve got some musicians in the house! Josh talked in church today about his Trek experiences. He was asked 1/2 hour before the meeting so he winged it, did great and made us laugh. It was such a neat meeting hearing the youth share their experiences. Nick went 4 years ago, good memories, and Trevor will go in 2015.

“Sundials in the shade” is what Benjamin Franklin called wasted strengths.

I gave a lesson a few weeks ago on developing talents, it’s such a good topic and fun to teach, I want to share it here as a reference, mainly for me. But it’s beneficial for all, religious or not. So here it is in a nutshell… a little long but worth the read.

“Only Those Who Risk Going Too Far Can Possibly Find Out How Far They Can Go” ~T.S. Elliot

We were all born with special gifts, talents, and abilities. In Exodus, Moses was a great leader, but he needed Aaron, his brother, to help as a spokesman. Some of us are leaders like Moses or good speakers like Aaron. Some of us can sing well or play an instrument. Others may be good at sports or able to work well with our hands. Other talents we might have are understanding others, patience, cheerfulness, or the ability to teach others.

We have the responsibility to develop the talents we have been given. Don’t hide them, use them. Matthew 5:16- let others see our good works and glorify our Father in Heaven.

I had each lady write down 1 or 2 talents that they enjoy, then write down a talent they want to develop. Go ahead, do it. As we go through these 6 steps on developing our talents, focus on the talent you want to work on. Writing it down helps it become a goal and a plan to work on, not just an idea.

1. Discover our talents. Evaluate ourselves to find our strengths and abilities. Our family and friends can help us do this, ask in prayer, personality/aptitude tests, patriarchal blessings…

2. Be willing to spend the time and effort to develop the talent we are seeking.

3. Have faith that God will help us, and we must have faith in ourselves. Remember the message from the Little Engine that Could, “if you think you can, you’re right, if you think you can’t, you’re right”.

4. Learn the skills necessary for us to develop our talents. Taking a class, reading a book, asking a friend or professional to teach you. Research.

5. Practice using your talent. Every talent takes effort and work to develop. The master of a talent must be earned.

6. Share our talents with others. It is by using our talents that they grow. See Matthew 25:29- parable of the talents. If we don’t use it, we lose it.

Each person’s talents are enduring and unique.

Then we discussed the fact we aren’t going to be great at everything we try or want to do, we should discover and develop our natural talents, and our weaknesses will become stronger or less pertinent.

“Some people believe that their greatest improvement will come from overcoming their weaknesses. Buckingham says, No! Your greatest improvement will come from identifying your natural talents and strengthening them”.

Josh getting home from a Pioneer Trek, ahh, what a cute cowboy, don’t tell him I said that. He had a great time roughing it with the youth, pulling a handcart each day for miles as they traveled in assigned families in the wilderness. These kids were totally out of their element- away from civilization, no cell phones, internet, or normal clothing (the girls had to wear pioneer dresses and bonnets), away from all the distractions of the world, getting a feel for what the pioneers experienced. What a neat experience Josh and what strength each youth brought as they endured! Josh loved it but couldn’t wait to shower when he got home.

Trevor, not excited at all for football. it doesn’t start until next week, but he had to wear his pads this morning at breakfast. Says he’s breaking them in. :)

Nick taught the boys some racing strokes. He’s such a fast swimmer, I thought he’d be a little rusty since not swimming much since HS, but he’s a natural.

Word of advice, you don’t want to sit by Josh during a parade of a neighboring city. When the Jordan High football team went by in the parade with their squirt guns & water balloons, gently squirting the crowd, Josh yelled “Go Alta!” Rival High School where Josh goes. I quickly covered my camera when I saw it coming, Nick & Josh both ended up drenched, and the poor lady next to them. It was pretty funny, ironically Nick got the worst of it and he’s a proud Jordan Alumni. Wish I had it on tape. At least they were cooled off.

A Day with my Boys…

The girls were invited to Seven Peaks (waterslide park) with their good friend, so we enjoyed some rare time with only mom & her boys…

Not so little anymore, sigh... We drove around uptown listening to a great/ funny CD and enjoying the sights, then ended up here. They were good sports to let me take pictures :)

Neat seeing the new displays in the Visiting Center and watching Testaments again. Trevor was impressed by the displays of emergency welfare provided throughout the nation and told me to sign him up, he wants to help! I think he’ll do a lot of helping and serving in his life, him and his brothers have such a love and concern for others, now if I can say they always show that to each other, well usually :). We also enjoyed a nice chat with some young girl missionaries from Hong Kong, they said how lucky our girls must be to have 3 big brothers, cute.

Beautiful JSM building on our way to the Lion House for their famous cinnamon rolls. Don’t mind- N & J in jeans & T in his swimsuit from earlier today. We didn’t plan this far ahead.

So fun spending the afternoon with my boys, we’ll do it again soon and see Legacy.

A perfect day for Lagoon Nostalgia, such fun memories of this place, glad my kids get to make some too

The girls are just tall enough to ride all the fun rides. They love rollercoasters like the rest of us, Wicked & Colossus their favorite! Sage had to bring her cute wedge sandals to make it on, since she’s a tad bit shorter then Sophie. It would totally stink if Sophie could ride them and not Sage.

Good job girls! Not bad for only seven months of lessons, kudos to their talented teacher. They really enjoy piano and practice often throughout the day, even learning their big brothers songs.

Their first roses :), thanks dad! They came straight from soccer, had to dress and do hair in the car.

They loved getting roses from dad and took good care of them- keeping them in the sun with plenty of water and rose food. Such disappointment when they saw them die so quickly, I should’ve warned them that once cut, they don’t last long. At least they enjoyed them for a short time.

If it has anything to do with a ball, or sports, Sophie and Sage are into it. Basketball, kickball, tennis, biking, swimming… but soccer is their all time favorite, they even sleep in soccer shorts. They were on two soccer teams this year (long story, but it worked out great, phew)…

The Red Dragons

this was a fun team. They may be one of the smallest on the field, but don’t let that fool you, they really stand out. The coaches wife said the coach wanted to take them home, so impressed with them & their skills, and their cuteness of course. He chuckled each time they made a goal with their cool, matter-of-fact look on their face like “that was easy”. They are such naturals, kick it right with such power, play positions, don’t steal the ball from their teammates or throw elbows like some do, and have good sportsmanship. It is a darling team and they made many new friends. Red Dragons won all but one game ;) Go Red Dragons!

“Peace, love, rock the field. Peace, peace, love, love, rock the field!” was the cute cheer this team cheered each week. This is their 3rd and last year playing on this awesome team (I think they only lost once or twice in 3 years), they learned a lot on this team- playing positions, great form, teamwork, they’ll miss it and their friends, but both girls made the Sparta Premier team. They are so excited! another girl from this team made it too :). woohoo S & S!

I am happy for them, it’s not an easy team to make. They started training last week and it should be good, but I’m concerned at some of the tactics, they have a pretty controlling coach. Their practices are almost 2 hours long, luckily only twice a week right now. So far they like it and want to go for it. So Sparta it is, they have their first tournaments in Park City in Aug.

Speaking of sports, this was another amazing team that Trevor (#17) was on- undefeatable! (only one in the league that didn’t lose). But the best part is how the boys played together and their amazing coach. He was professional and great with the boys, a step above of the rest. He even calmed the parents when the score was close. Good job boys, great season!!

Looking forward to a lot of this… & a little hiking, bike riding (we rode the river trail yesterday with the family- 9 miles, phew :), BBQ’s, dance recitals, football & soccer games, along with some good summer reading. Love this time of year! We’re missing Josh, he’s in Lake Powell for a week with friends, and Nick’s getting things ready for his mission, it will be here before we know it, sigh.

Baptism day for Sophie & Sage- {Sunday Snapshot}

These first pictures from a visit to Temple Square a week before their baptism, the girls counting down the days, such pure little girls! It was a little strange when perfect strangers came up with their camera and asked if they can take a picture.

Sage (left) and Sophie (rt), excitement and butterflies on their special day. Our family was asked to sing for the musical number at their baptism, “My Life is a Gift”, many said we harmonized well. It was a large group with seven children getting baptized, so neat directing the opening song with a full congregation singing “I Love to See the Temple”, it’s been awhile since I’ve directed music.

After the baptism, we met at the house for BBQ meatballs, Asian salad, fruit, and yummy cake to celebrate. I was lame and too busy visiting to get pictures of our guests. We are so thankful for those who joined us on their special day- their primary teachers, our new bishop, piano teacher, friends and family, so many that made it special for them. I couldn’t ask for a better baptism day for our girls, and they felt so good. Sage said she felt the Holy Spirit, I’ll bet Sophie did too.

So neat having Nick baptize Sage, and Paul baptized Sophie. And the confirmation Paul gave brought tears to my eyes, it was so meaningful.

Sage holding precious baby Libby (my nieces miracle baby). She was born 10 wks early, weighing only 2 lbs, 3 oz. She’s a fighter and is now off of oxygen and out of premie clothes, such a blessing!

Below are the girls “All About Me” forms. They filled them out independently, such similarities and differences. The bishop called them up in church to welcome them as the newest members of our ward and read about them, very cute, they have a sweet connection with our new bishop, he’s great with kids. I love that they both put Jesus as their hero!

BTW, Sophie’s favorite food is Steak, she was deciding between that and chicken enchilada’s

My “little hula honey’s” printed on their shirt. Spirit week for the last week of school is extra exciting in a school that wears uniforms all year (big fan of uniforms). The girls were thrilled to wear their new toe socks, although they had to cover them with shoes, I’m sure they’ll let their friends know about their socks :). Trevor ran out the door before I could get a picture, but he dressed for athletic day. I’m looking forward to a great summer and finally some good weather. Have a great week!

Called to Serve! {Sunday Snapshot}

It finally came, my oldest sons mission call (there were some paperwork delays [dr’s portion], then it was sent to his college dorm instead of home, so we were happy to finally have it in hand). We’re so happy for him and his desire to serve a full time mission (2 years). He’ll be missed, but he’ll do great!

Nick is called to the Mesa, Arizona mission, Spanish speaking. Woot! It came as a surprise to me at first (not to him), I won’t go into detail but I thought most likely he would go foreign. Must be another chapter in his life. But it really feels right and Nick feels good about it. As a mom, it will be comforting having him stateside, although it won’t be a breeze, I know he’ll do well with the language and love the people. So, he enters the MTC (missionary training center) on July 20th. It will come quick so I want to make the most of our time before he leaves.

Sophie & Sage tell me often how much they’ll miss him

You’ll be missed Nick- your sense of humor, your ambition, your positive attitude, and your genuine friendship and care for others & family, and most importantly your love for the Lord. But we’re happy you can share the gospel with others! Love you Elder B!

Our stay in Anaheim was delightful, a new place just blocks from Disneyland. It had a vibrant contemporary décor with all the fun stuff, very family friendly. We enjoyed the fireworks on the roof the first night, and came back to this welcoming bouquet of balloons for the girls.

I have to admit, his birthday snuck up on us. We talked about it, I made some plans, then it was here before we knew it. I picked up the kids from school and on the way home we grabbed some fresh steaks & fruit, they wanted to pick something out for him at the dollar store (frisbee from Sage, headphones from Sophie, & I-pad case from Trevor), I picked up a favorite mint ice-cream cake at Coldstone, and WaLa, a birthday party in the makings. Josh came home and said- “hey mom, I’m in a guitar concert tonight” at his High School (gotta love teenage scheduling, it’s almost as good as mine :), so what better way to spend your b-day then watch your talented son play. We enjoyed our BBQ, went to the concert, came back for ice-cream cake & gifts, put the girls down and watched “The King’s Speech”, great movie! Happy Birthday Babe. Thanks for being such a great dad and wonderful husband! I’m taking you out tomorrow night, just you and I.

We went to a favorite buffet in Las Vegas. Josh grabbed Sage and Paul took Sophie to help dish up their plate. Paul asked- “So, what do you want to start with- fruit, salad, or go right to the meat?” (I’m a salad, fruit girl myself) Sophie’s reply- “Right to the meat.” So cute when they came back with identical plates, on both trips. Had to get a picture before they took a bite. The only thing different was their choice of dessert. Ya, they were hungry, it amazes me how much our girls can eat, when they first came home they ate like it was their last meal, they can still eat as much as our boys.

Happy Mother’s Day

To all the great mother’s out there. Most the blogs I visit seem like fabulous moms!

And to my beautiful mom- compassionate, fun-loving mother. One who sacrificed and worked hard as a single mom, who took the time to play with us, to teach us, raised us in the gospel, who never gossiped or openly judged others and taught us to do the same. I like you (interrupted by Sage, she snuck that I like you in while I walked away for a minute, thought I’d keep it :)

It was a nice mother’s day. Sophie, my morning girl, snuck in early while I was in the shower and asked if she could make some popcorn for her and Sage (who was still sleeping). I said, aren’t you supposed to make me breakfast in bed? She got this serious look on her face and guiltily said, “I’m not used to that yet.” I grinned and said it’s really ok. The next thing I knew I was surprised with this interesting breakfast. Her and Trevor put some thought in this, choosing some of my favorite foods/snacks arranged into a sun shape, then they decided it’s a flower. It made my morning.

We rushed off to church and enjoyed some great talks on Mother’s, young Camry gave a sweet tribute to her mom. It was my first week teaching Relief Society, and although I’m not a fan of public speaking, it seemed to have gone well, many nice comments. I prepared like crazy, felt good about it, overcame my nerves, relied on the Lord, received great input from the women, a few tears from some, and the spirit was strong. I’m thankful for this calling to teach and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.

Glad she has a sense of humor my girls and their rabbit ears :). She’s a great Grandma with our big crew, always relaxed, loving, and welcoming, a part of each of their lives. They sure love their Grandma’s! both (Sorry Nick, I wasn’t looking through the view finder for that pic, my bad, you didn’t really need that right ear though)

The plaque says “Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs in my field, since the payment is Pure Love.” We also got her a nice CD she’ll enjoy.

My mom also does so much. Always planning and preparing family get togethers full of food and fun, the life of the party. Compassionate and always sacrificing for others. We’re thankful for our wonderful moms!

I love the goings on of raising a family. The teaching, the training, and all I learn from them. Helping them succeed in school and church, and seeing their joy when they do. My children, and their dad, bring me so much joy. Thanks for a great Mother’s Day!

Couldn’t ask for a better beach day- good weather lucked out, great sand, nice waves, dolphins swimming along the surf- nearly perfect! The boys were in the water boogie boarding most of the time, couldn’t get many pictures of them, the girls had fun jumping waves, building castles and warming up in the sand. Paul, a little under the weather, so this was a nice break to relax in the sun. We could’ve stayed all day, but stopped here from San Diego on our way to Anaheim. Before leaving we took a stroll down Mariner’s Mile along the yacht club, Wow!

A highlight meeting up with Danny & Lindsay. More exciting then seeing Mickey, and they love Mickey! Their adorable baby is all smiles and so sweet! Glad you could join us D & L.

Of course we had to ride the Tea Cups. Good sports, the boys riding with the family, they had that cup spinning! Besides Peter Pan (one of my favorites), this was the only kid ride we went on. The girls enjoy roller coasters and thrill rides like the rest of us, their favorite was Space Mountain, and of course they liked Pirates of the Caribbean & Haunted Mansion. So nice having them big enough to ride most all of the rides. They didn’t like It’s a Small World and the Tikki Room, saying it was fake, hee hee. The only thing that scared them were the witches during Fantasmic. They’ve always been petrified over the wicked stepmother & witches portrayed in Disney movies. And, although they may not admit it, they were mesmerized by the princesses, especially watching them dance on the ship. They thanked me about five times each for coming here.

So glad we were able to do this as a family before Nick is off on his mission. Our last Spring Break for awhile with all of us together.

City Egg Hunt, it’s quality not quantity right? Not at an egg hunt, but glad they were able to laugh at their scarce baskets.

Sage was first to find her basket. My mom used to hide our baskets each year, we’ve kept that tradition going.

Enjoying the shows, they were a little different since last time we were here, a few years ago, very entertaining. Trevor wanted to sit in the soak zone one row ahead of us, so he sat with another family that practically wanted to adopt him by the time the show was over. Cute as we ran into them throughout the day and they acted like they were seeing an old friend when they saw Trev.

Oceanside

Our timeshare in Oceanside is right on the beach, so after checking in we found ourselves there in no time. We arrived a little later then we wanted, who’d expect rush hour traffic in the middle of the Mojave Desert? good driving Nick But that didn’t stop the fun, Nick even braved the water for some body surfing last night, I guess where he just came from (BYU-I) he could handle the 62 degrees water temp, and there was a great tide coming in (got too dark for good pics without our big flash).

My Pauly’s come down with a cold / sore throat. He’s a trooper, but sorry baby you can’t enjoy it more, we’ll take good care of you.

Who needs the sun to have fun at the beach? The girls trying not to get their skirts wet :). Then we walked down the pier for dinner at Joe’s Crab Shack, buying the kids dry T-shirts on the way.

The kids have been counting down the days until Spring Break, on our way now to Sunny CA (wish we could meet up with some bloggy friends, I’ll have to plan it next time). Flying was out of the question for seven, so we rented a van and hit the road, with 4 drivers :). I like road trips, and nice to think we don’t have anything on the agenda but relaxing and fun for the next week. Pulling into the City that never sleeps, hoping to see a good show tonight. Phantom was great last time, thinking of Beatles Love, or taking the kids to the Tournaments of Kings dinner show. Any favorites? Has anyone seen Lion King?

There’s always a good laugh when raising kids… when she was secretly asking my Josh to the dance (girls choice), she got the wrong Josh. There is another Josh in his large HS with the same last name, same grade, they even have some classes together (poor teacher). So my Josh got a call from the other Josh, asking if he knew Whitney, “Yes”, “well I think she just asked you to Sadie Hawkins.” The other Josh went on this fun, creative Treasure Hunt with treats & prizes, only to find out it was for my Josh. Dang, but pretty funny. They figured it out and had a great time at the dance.

for something I love more! I did it, I put in my two weeks notice at work. It wasn’t exactly easy, I’ve really enjoyed my design job, but it’s for the right reasons, I feel good about it. And congratulations on your new position honey, I know you’ll do great!

Later that day I went to the girls PTC while they were at piano, I was greeted with these letters…

“Dear Mom and Dad, thanks for making those cookies for me last night. Mom and Dad could you tell Sophie to stop playing with Bruno so hard. Mom do you think you could pick us up early now on. Dad thanks for helping me do my poem. Thanks for letting us have a dog named Bruno. Mom thanks for driving us to school. I’m glad you sighn me up for Soccer. Love, Sage”

“Dear Mom and Dad, thanks for every thing you had done for are family. Thank you for feeding me every single day I really like it. Thanks you for buying a dog name Bruno and a cat name Shadow. Thank you for teaching me cool stuff like times. Thank you for leting me go to school every single day. Thank you for all of the Wii game. I really like them. Thank you for adopping me. Thank you for getting me from China. Thank you for always takeing me to places. Thank you for nameing me. Sincerely, Love Sophie.”

OK, it was already a bit of an emotional day, so when I started reading their letters, I had to stop during Sophie’s in fear of blubbering right there. These letters just reinforced my decision. Their teacher, a little teary eyed herself, said it about made her and her aid cry when they saw what Sophie wrote. In the whole scheme of things, nothing is more significant then the work we can do in our homes.

Wind Sock…

Working on their monthly book report, this month a Wind Sock. Not due until Friday, but no procrastinating with these two.

Squeals when I brought out my Prismacolor Pencil Set I used back in Design School, surprised they weren’t all dried out.

Sage put her picture in the window to trace, adding every detail.

Sophie carefully drew a dog for her book “The First Day Jitters” (funny book)

I love you like Crazy Cakes girls!!! Sophie was done and off playing already.

Some things I really like about their school are monthly book reports w/ projects and different genres, monthly poems they memorize and recite, & challenging spelling tests each week, custom to their level. It’s a lot of homework with daily math and reading, but luckily they want to get it done first thing after school, even starting, and often finishing, in the car :). I asked Sage today what she enjoys learning at school, she said “learning about planets.” cute

Do you like our new craft / homework area? Out with the dust collecting large weight set, in with the homework nook (thanks hon!). BTW, Paul has been doing P90X lately and is in such good shape! Lost about 40 lbs, he feels better and looks great! Post later on that.

The Leprechaun stopped by today while the kids were at school, made a mess of things

Then our traditional Green dinner… Basil Pasta, Green Salad, Parsley Baguette, Lime Ade, with Lime Sherbet for dessert. There’s something about green food coloring in food that turns them, and me off, but they did have green milk for their breakfast this morning. Meal was a hit, next year I’ll have to add a green jell-o. What are you serving?

When Sophie walked in the door and saw the mess & surprise, she asked with a smile “was it really you?”, I didn’t reply so she just went with it. And cute when Sage gave me her green silly band this morning, right off her wrist for mom, since I was in my non green PJ’s :).

Weekend on campus

We spent a delightful weekend at Nick’s University (our alma mater), ordaining him an Elder as he prepares for his mission and finishes up his first year of college, one more month to go! It was great spending time with him, seeing him at school, meeting his friends & neat bishop (he had wonderful things to say about Nick and said he will really miss him). My dad was able to join us, such a supportive Grandpa. We dined and enjoyed the company, the ordination was powerful and touching (thanks Paul) and they invited us to attend their student ward (church meeting) afterwards. That was a treat and brought back many memories of my three years there. It seems like yesterday I was eating in the cafeteria, working on my big design project (always had a big design project due), studying like crazy while going to dances, games, movie night with Pauly and my roommates. Such fun memories… Although I loved it then, I’m more aware of the great spirit of this place now that I’m older, it will always be a special place and I’m so glad Nick is spending his first year here.

They invited Trevor (12), our deacon, to help pass the sacrament. So cute seeing him pass with the college students, he thought it was awesome. You could’ve heard a pin drop in that meeting (I’m used to family wards), I was just hoping the girls would sit through it reverently, we didn’t have any books or quiet things we usually have for them, and sitting for an hour (or three) in church isn’t their favorite thing. They did pretty good, the girls behind us adored them and told us how cute they were, one said- energetic but loveable, that about summed it up. Everyone there was very welcoming and accommodating. See you soon Nick, I mean Elder B.! Congrats!

One of Nick’s best friend received his mission call to Japan, luckily he’s still in the MTC learning the language preparing to go, he’ll have his work cut out for him. Our prayers pour out to those in Japan! His other great friend is off to Russia. So neat to see these fine boys grow up and be strong young men!

Waking up to this

So much for Spring weather, but this was stunning driving through it this morning, I had to grab my purse camera (sooc) to capture the blanket of snow throughout. The snow was dense and heavy, sad to see it toppled over some very old trees, but it was beautiful, driving through a snow tunnel.
